ISTE Standards

The ISTE Standards for teachers are a set of standards or guidelines that teachers need to follow to be prepared to educate students in the digital age. Following the standards help to insure that both teachers and students are prepared to understand and grow along with the several forms of technology that are used in such a digital, and technological dependent era.

There are five ISTE Standards:

  1. Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity: teachers will help students advance creativity in their personal learning experience through the use of digital tools. The key components to this standard is innovation and problem solving in virtual environments.
  2. Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments: teachers will utilize digital tools in lesson plans, assessments and assignments. The tools used should accommodate to individual students learning styles, as well as allow students to manage their own process and educational goals.
  3. Model digital age work and learning: teachers will prepare their students for careers in the future by utilizing digital tools and platforms that are available and commonly used in the work force. Teachers are encouraged to do this by connecting with parents, peers and the community through the use of digital age media and formats.
  4. Promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility: teachers will follow and teach ethical and responsible use of digital tools. It is important that teachers are able to educate students of appropriate online behavior and the repercussions of having inappropriate photos, language and messages online.
  5. Engage in professional growth and leadership: as a teachers career progresses, it is important that he or she keeps up with the technology advances and the digital tools that are made available to them and their students. Teachers should continue to take technological based classes, evaluate research on digital tools, converse with colleagues and utilize digital tools in the classroom as much as possible.

As I am just beginning my education to become a teacher, I have not yet had the chance to learn the most effective way to fulfill each standard in a hands on way. I feel that I have an understanding of each standard, and why it is important that teachers possess the skill set to teach in the digital age. Additionally, I can see that educators need to provide students with the tools necessary to succeed in a digital age. In my opinion, being a student in the digital age at a collegiate level has given me a basis of knowledge for the use of technological tools in the classroom. The biggest difference is that I have always been on the student side of things, and I will be transitioning into using the technology to teach. I definitely feel more confident in modeling digital age work and learning and promoting/modeling digital citizenship because I have more personal experience with those two standards from my college experiences and even through using social media sites. I am eager to learn and improve my skills and knowledge in facilitating and inspiring student learning and creativity, designing and developing digital age learning experiences and assessments and engaging in professional growth and leadership.

To other aspiring educators, what are your ideas on how to implement the ISTE Standards into everyday situations in the classroom?

  1. Hi Ashley! Great post! I think it will be essential to implement ISTE standards in the classroom and there are endless possibilities! At the elementary school I currently work at, the students get time every single day to do ST Math or Imagine Learning on the computers or iPads in their classroom. They also have the option to go to the computer lab. In the future, I hope to create a classroom blog. I’d like to teach them valuable social, reading, writing and technology skills that are necessary to creating and maintaining a classroom blog that is read by other students and teachers all over the globe.

  2. Hello Ashley,

In regards to ISTE Standard #1 ā€“ Inspire student learning and creativity ā€“ I have always wanted to incorporate music as a learning tool in my classroom. Technology in the classroom could include a record player or SoundCloud, etc. I plan on teaching 5th Grade and words or soul in music could demonstrate learning in topics such as History, memorization and personalized expression of oneself. After shadowing a 3rd Grade classroom, using I-Pads to teach online curriculum has grown tremendously in popularity for Elementary students as well. These are two tech learning tools I would utilize almost everyday.

    Great Question!

  3. Hi Ashley,
Your post is so succinct, these standards were a bit dense and your summaries did a great job cutting straight to the highlights. The video I found showcases a school in Singapore that emphasizes technology in the classroom. All of the teachers essentially have to be technology teachers. In each shot the students have a computer at their disposal and each class has a way to incorporate digital tools. One way I found particularly interesting was the teacher using Second Life as a way to discuss art. The students had a Second Life account and as their avatar they explored an school-made art gallery that featured local artists. There were also places to comment on the displayed pieces. It looked like an incredible way to get students discussing art!
I hope you enjoy the video!

  4. Hi Ashley,

Your bio was short and sweet and to the point!! Like it a lot and am very excited for you to pursue your dream as a teacher.
I feel as though integrating the ISTE standards in my classroom will be difficult because I don’t want to incorporate to much technology in my classroom. I am a little stubborn and enjoy the chalk board method and engaging one on one. However, I know I will have to incorporate the digital world eventually. I think I would incorporate it mainly by facilitating and inspiring the students while at the same time learning myself. The digital world will be a constant learning experience for me, so as I try to teach my students, maybe they can teach me as well.

Here is a short video for you to watch!!

  5. Hey Ashley, though I still am a far cry from knowing all the tech tools that I will utilize within my classroom, I am now starting to get an idea. One way that I will use technology daily is through roll call. I will use my IPad or Tablet to take roll and make the link available to view for the students and parents, along with current assignments, the syllabus, and any notes so that everyone can be on board and have no confusion. I love the use of Google Doc to have students work collaboratively. I also want to have units where students can get creative and create videos and digital art to show their knowledge of a subject. Quizlet looks like a great way to make taking quizzes easier. I also think that I could do a few units where I use the flipped model.

Anyhow, I found this article from the National Education Association on ways to blend technology in the classroom. Hopefully it helps give you some ideas!

  6. hi Ashley great question, my response would be to never forget them and read them a few times throughout the year to make sure your lesson plans incorporate those standards so you know you are doing right by your students and doing your job correctly based off those principles. here is something you should read about ISTE standards and how to incorporate them into teaching in today’s classroom. http://www.iste.org/standards/tools-resources/essential-conditions/implementation-planning

  7. Hi Kelly,
This is a great question! I am not quite sure of how I will be implementing the ISTE Standards in my classroom quite yet. I have some ideas but I know that I will be using some of the tools our class presented two weeks ago. I think one way to implement ISTE standards is by making my students work on group projects using online sources. Iā€™m also thinking about implementing twitter to have class discussions.

  8. Hello Ashley,

I think one great way to incorporate ISTE standards into the classroom and curriculum is to make sure that students are familiar with the standards and then create incentives for students to meet the standards. I think that naturally most well planned classroom activities involving technology are naturally going to fall under the ISTE categories and educators must highlight and demonstrate the practicality.
